Featured Question of the Week:
I’ve submitted tons of applications, but I haven’t heard back from anyone. What am I doing wrong?
Auxpert Answer:
When it comes to submitting applications, quality is more important than quantity. If you haven’t been hearing back from companies it might be time to rethink your application and the types of roles you are applying to.
There is nothing wrong with shooting for the stars, but if you don’t have any of the direct experience the job is calling for, the likelihood of you getting picked within a competitive pool of applicants is low. All hope is not lost though! It could be highly beneficial for you to consider stepping stone positions that will push you towards that ultimate goal.
Another common reason applicants aren’t hearing back from companies is because they are not taking the time to tailor their resume to the jobs they are applying to. Bottom line – if you don’t look relevant for a job, a recruiter is not going to take the time to dive deeper. It is essentially that you read and understand a job description so that you can highlight specific skills and experience on your resume that align with what the company is looking for.
In today’s job market it is all about who you know and you are guaranteed to have a better chance of landing an interview if you have been referred into the company by someone who already works there or who has a strong relationship with the hiring manager. Consider who you know and utilize your LinkedIn Connections to give yourself the best possible chance of becoming a serious candidate.
